Stowell's Evergreen PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 15 September 2009 12:02
Heirloom, open pollinated. In northern climates or higher altitudes, this variety may not reach full maturity in the growing season.
However, before the killing frost entire stalks may be harvested, including the partially mature ears, and hung in a barn or shed. Ears may then be picked for a month or more, hence the name evergreen.).
This has been a home garden and market favorite white variety since Nathan Stowell of New Jersey introduced it in 1848.
It is a late season variety, yields eight inch ears that produce anywhere from fourteen to eighteen rows of sweet, white, tender kernels.
Keeps longer than most which makes it one of the best heirloom varieties for table, canning and freezing.
Adapted to the Mid-Atlantic region, where it is a dependable variety.
