Richlea is a medium-sized Chilean-type similar in size and color to the Chilean lentil grown in the USA. It is a high yielding variety that is susceptible to both ascochyta blight and anthracnose.
Richlea is a medium seed size variety with a greenish yellow seed coat and yellow cotyledons.
Richlea lentils have been the most successful variety for over 14 years, even though some 20 plus other varieties have been developed during that time. The Richlea lentil is the standard from which others are measured, both on yield and marketability.
Richlea lentils are still the most popular lentil variety among farmers in North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana. Greater lentil production plus greater processing capacity in the region has encouraged farmers to seed other lentil varieties, especially large green Pennell lentils.
