Lentils are the seed of a small shrub and are dried after harvesting. Lentils have been eaten for over 8000 years and originated in Southwestern Asia along the Indus River. They are a staple food for many South Asian cultures.
Organic Red Lentil Sprout Seed - The most common type of organic red lentil sprout seed is the Red Chief. Organic Lentil sprouts are high in fiber, protein and amino acids, vitamins A, C, B complex and E, iron, calcium and phosphorous. Raw organic red lentil sprouts can be a bit peppery to the taste. Organic Red Lentil Sprout Seeds make a good substitute for celery or green pepper in salads, soups and vegetable combinations. Organic Red Lentil Sprouts soup is hearty and nutritious and was a staple food of the middle east in biblical times.
Red Chief developed in 1980 by Washington State University, USDA/ARS.
This lentil has the skin removed through a process called decoragating. It is a brilliant orange color under the skin and is the only lentil with the skin removed. A great way to liven up dishes. Great in Psychedelic Salad. ‘Redchief’ is a large-seeded red-cotyledon lentil that is grown on a small scale; however, its popularity is steadily expanding
Size is about the same as the green/brown lentil, about 1/2 to 3/4 cm.
Quick cooking without soaking. Ideal for salads, soups, garnishing and purees. Lentils have a tiny lens shaped pulse (the pulse is the dried seed of legumes, such as beans or peas), they have been traditionally used as a meat substitute. They are the seeds of a small shrub and when harvested are then dried. Red Chief Lentils have a deep orange color and their texture allows them to maintain their shape when cooked. The Red Chief has a mild, earthly flavor which makes a hearty addition to soups and casseroles. Try them in both hot or cold salads.
