Pea Half Pint is a real 'Tom Thumb' for container growing on the patio or windowsill, as well as for sowing under cloches in the garden for an extra early crop. It is a very old variety dating back to the 1800s when there were far more pea varieties than there are now. Being dwarf, only 30-37cm (12-15in) high and bushy means pea Half Pint needs no support. Fun to grow in containers as an attractive and edible centerpiece on the dining table. Sowing instructions: Sow seeds March to June. Sow seeds thinly, 5cm (2in) deep in drills 45cm (18in) apart in rich, well-drained soil, which has been raked to a fine tilth. Alternatively sow this very dwarf variety into containers. This variety is also said to be very cold tolerant, down to -6C (20F). It could also be grown in a cold frame, due to its size, and the added protection will aid good cropping. Growing instructions: Water ground regularly, especially in dry periods. Aftercare: Water when in flower will improve the cropping. Peas are ready to pick around 14 weeks from sowing date, regular picking will prolong cropping period. Go to table of pea varieties |
