'GS1001' has stronger intensity of anthocyanin colouration of the hypocotyl than the reference varieties. 'GS1001' flowers earlierand matures earlier than 'Gentleman'. The seed coat lustre of 'GS1001' is dull while it is shiny in 'Gentleman'. 'GS1001' has a yellow hilum colour while the reference varieties have a dark brown hilum colour. The hilum size in 'GS1001' is smaller than the reference varieties. 'GS1001' has better resistance to shattering than 'Gaillard'. The resistance to lodging in 'GS1001' is better than in 'Gentleman'.
Description:
'GS1001' is an oilseed type soybean variety. The hypocotyl has strong anthocyanin colouration. The flowers are purple in colour. 'GS1001' has a dark green leaf colour with the lateral leaflet being round ovate in shape with weak blistering. The plant pubescence is tawny in colour. 'GS1001' is an indeterminate type, with a semi-erect growth habit, and a brown mature pod colour. The seed is a dull yellow colour with a spherical rounded shape. The hilum is lacking the abscission layer, is yellow in colour and small in size. The hilum funicle is the same colour as the testa. 'GS1001' is moderately resistant to Powdery mildew (Microsphaera diffusa). 'GS1001' has good resistance to shattering and lodging.
Origin & Breeding History:
 'GS1001' originated from a cross of 3948 x M84-456 made in 1988 in Guelph, Ontario. M84-456 is a Michigan variety and 3948 was a University of Guelph line. Seed was advanced by single seed descent and bulked in F5. The bulk of F5 tested in Charlottetown, PE. In 1999, Gowan Seeds obtained bulk F5 seed and selected for Iron Chlorosis tolerance and agronomic traits. 60 single plants were advanced by single plant rows. A single plant was selected for uniformity and of which bulk seed was increased to produce GS1001 breeder seed.
