CDC Sedley is a high-yielding, early-maturing, yellow cotyledon lentil cultivar developed by the Crop Development Centre (CDC), University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. It is suitable for the large green market class of lentil and is intended for cultivation in all lentil-growing areas of western Canada. CDC Sedley was developed from an F2-derived family originating from Cross 946 between LSG (a selection from a commercial sample of large green lentil from Spain) and breeding line 638-1. Line 638-1 is an ascochyta blight (caused by Ascochyta lentis Vassilievsky) resistant sister line of CDC Vantage (Vandenberg et al. 2002a). The Spanish line was used to contribute extra large seed size. F3:2 progeny microplots were screened for ascochyta blight reaction in an irrigated nursery in 1995. Replicated yield trials of F4:2 breeding lines began in 1996. Line 946-7Y was tested in replicated trials at four locations in 1997 and then entered in registration trials in 1998 and 1999. Breeder seed was bulked from 36 single F6-derived plant progeny plots of Line 946-7Y in 2000. The selection criteria for CDC Sedley were yield, maturity, large seed size, seed plumpness, and seed coat colour. CDC Sedley was evaluated for yield and agronomic performance as Line 946-7Y in the Lentil Co-operative Yield Test in 1998 and 1999 and in regional trials in Saskatchewan in 2000 and 2002. The commercial standard for comparison in trials was CDC Glamis (Vandenberg et al. 2002b). The mean seed yield of CDC Sedley in 41 trials was 104% of CDC Glamis. CDC Sedley flowers 3 d earlier and matures 1 d earlier than CDC Glamis. Seed weight is about 73 mg, 18% greater than CDC Glamis. The seed coat colour of CDC Sedley is light green and it has yellow cotyledons, similar to CDC Glamis. CDC Sedley was rated susceptible to anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum truncatum (Schw.) Andrus and W.D. Moore. This cultivar will give lentil producers the option of growing an earlier maturing large green lentil with large seed size. Developed in 2001 • Yield: 1709 kg ha–1 • Days to flower: 56 • Days to maturity: 96 • Plant height: 41 cm • Seed weight: 73 g 1000–1 Go to table of lentil varieties |
