LeMay is a high-yielding, yellow cotyledon lentil cultivar developed by the Crop Development Centre, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. It is suitable for the French Green market class of lentil and is intended for cultivation in all lentil-growing areas of western Canada. CDC LeMay was developed from an F2-derived family originating from Cross 983 between PI 486128 and FVR9Y-11. Both parental lines had seed coat characteristics appropriate for the French Green market class. PI 486128 is the French cultivar Du Puy and FVR9Y-11 is a high-yielding CDC breeding line originally developed from the cross Du Puy Ч PI 345634. F3:2 progeny plots of Cross 983 were screened for ascochyta blight (Ascochyta lentis Vassilievsky) reaction in an irrigated nursery in 1996. Replicated yield trials of F4:2 lines began in 1997. Line 983-87 was tested in replicated trials at four locations in 1998 and then entered in registration trials in 1999. Breeder seed was bulked from 57 F7:2 single plant progeny plots of Line 983-87. The selection criteria for CDC LeMay were yield, resistance to ascochyta blight, appropriate seed size for the French Green market class, seed plumpness, seed coat colour and pattern, and cotyledon colour. The commercial standard for comparison in trials was common French Green. Yield comparisons were made to CDC Milestone (Vandenberg et al. 2001). The mean seed yield of CDC LeMay in 31 trials was approximately 104 % of common French Green and 89% of CDC Milestone. Seed weight is about 32 mg compared to 31 mg for French Green and 37 mg for CDC Milestone. CDC LeMay was evaluated for yield and agronomic performance as Line 983-87 in the Lentil Co-operative Yield Test in 1999 and 2000 and in regional trials in Saskatchewan in 2001 and 2002. CDC LeMay flowers 2 d later than French Green and CDC Milestone. The seed coat of CDC LeMay is similar to that of French Green, a light green background colour covered by a blueblack marbling pattern. CDC LeMay has yellow cotyledons. CDC LeMay is susceptible to anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum truncatum.
