Description: Variety of hard, spring, early-ripening wheat, developed for the Canadian prairies in the early 20th century.Because of its early maturing quality, Marquis greatly extended the area where wheat may be safely grown. Its head is resistant to heavy winds and it yields flour of high quality. Creation: The first cross between an early-ripening Indian wheat (Hard Red Calcutta) and Red Fife made by Percy Saunders likely took place at the experimental farm at Agassiz, Manitoba, in 1892.
